You are not your body and face

You are so much more than the sum of your physical parts

Rollin the dice here; not entirely sure what Medium’s nipple policy is. (Not to mention That Cooch Tho!)

Over the weekend, the topic of “the 1–10 scale” came up with The Boy. It was me who brought it up —obviously — and in response to me doing so, he was all, “what am I?” Then quickly added, “wait. Don’t answer that.”

But I did answer that.

“Ten . You’re a ten. You’re my ten.” Because he is.

At the risk of sounding like that sad sac Instagram dude with his “curvy” wife, society’s “9s” and “10s” are not my 9s and 10s. They aren’t even my 8s.

Partly because I’m kinda turned off by the glossy, chiseled, delicate features most people consider “10s”— in the same sense I find something a little scary and highly unappetizing about wedding cakes.

But also partly because: my “10” can’t be ranked on appearance alone. Nobody’s can, in real life.

You are more than your physical features

In the wise words of Glennon Doyle Melton,

“Your body is not your masterpiece. Your life is.”

We’re pressured to have the perfect body and face — and to devote ourselves to the task of its perfection.

But the reality is, physical elements are not everything. Our lives are more than our looks. Our mindsets, our work, our relationships, our spirituality, everything else… is more important.

“Stop spending all day obsessing, cursing, perfecting your body like it’s all you’ve got to offer the world… Your body is not your offering. It’s just a really amazing instrument which you can use to create your offering each day.” — Melton

And your offering is everything else. It’s your mind, your mindset, your decisions, your responses, the love that you give on a daily basis.

That matters eons more — and when it comes to a scale, it’s the whole person that weighs in higher.

Which also means that whatever you’ve got going on, someone is into. There is not one type, and types mean more than appearance.
